Yesterday the Council of the European Union adopted a Strategic Framework on Human Rights and Democracy. The Strategic framework can be seen as a response to the obligation of the EU introduced by the Treaty on the European Union, which expresses the following: „The Union’s action on the international scene shall be guided by the principles which have inspired its own creation, (…) democracy, the rule of law and the universality and indivisibility of human rights.” (Article 21, Treaty of the European Union)

In the second half of 2012, Cyprus holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. For Cyprus, one of the smallest and newest members of the EU, presiding over the EU presents both a challenge and an opportunity. It will be a chance for Cyprus to make the image of the small island more pronounced and take appropriate steps towards a swift reunification. The challenge will be that on the one hand Cyprus will have to handle the critical economic situation in the EU. On the other pave the way for the next multi-annual financial framework and the EU’s long-term future. Praxoula Antoniadou Kyracou, former Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism will discuss the priorities Cyprus does and should hold during its presidency.

„Es ist kein Luxus, sondern eine Notwendigkeit in Zeiten einer Krise über die Grundsätze der europäischen Integration nachzudenken. Denn nur wer Grundsätze hat, kann im Sturm Kurs halten“. Unter diesem Motto sprach der Staatsminister im Auswärtigen Amt, Michael Link MdB, im Rahmen der FNF-Reihe „Diskussionen über Europa“ in Brüssel. Im April 2012 hatten die deutschen Liberalen die „Karlsruher Freiheitsthesen für eine offene Bürgergesellschaft“ beschlossen. Im Kapitel “Für ein liberales Europa in der Welt” fordern sie mehr europäische Rechtsstaatlichkeit und eine europäische Freiheitsverfassung als Grundlagen für die Vertiefung der europäischen Einigung. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Freiheitsthesen, zeigte Staatsminister Link Prioritäten und Perspektiven liberaler Europapolitik auf.
