After spending the past four years as Prime Minister, the election victory in March gave Vladimir Putin a third presidential term. The election was held against a backdrop of popular discontent, sparked by allegations of widespread fraud during December’s parliamentary elections in favour of Putin’s United Russia party. The series of anti-Putin street protests after the parliamentary elections continued and grew violent with Putin’s inauguration approaching. On the political level the People’s Freedom Party and the Republican Party of Russia recently joined forces against Putin. Where is Russia heading? Sascha Tamm, Head of the foundation’s Moscow office, will talk about the current state of affairs in Putin’s Russia, the chances and problems of opposition movements and venture a political and economic outlook.
