“Fog in Channel, Continent Cut Off?” a famous British newspaper headline reads. At our event, speakers from both sides of the channel will shed light on the European Union and its future scenarios. London has just spelled out its deep ambivalence about the EU: Not only has it signalled that it would withdraw from EU cooperation in justice and home affairs, along with other member states, it also threatened to veto any increase of the EU budget. The German government emphasized that it wants to have a strong UK in the EU and pushes for more Europe. The UK and other non-euro countries, however, are wary of proposals of a banking union, which it considers a potential threat to the single market. Where are the synergies between the German and British approaches? What role does public opinion play? Is Britain about to leave the EU and what can be done about it?
