Rethinking the future of Europe

den haag 2Representatives from over ten different liberal parties from all over the European Union gathered in The Hague to discuss the future of the European Union. Hans H. Stein, director of the Regional office European Institutions and North America of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom presented the foundation’s position paper on the European Union “A Europe of Freedom for and by its people!”.

In face of the euro crisis, increasing centralisation and protectionism it is time to rethink Europe’s future. An expert panel around Dr Hermann Otto Solms MP recommended promoting diversity and liberty by an open European integration of different speeds to ensure the work efficiency in a more and more heterogeneous EU. But to solve the crisis other crucial elements need to be discussed: A strengthened democracy, a just and sustainable EU-funding as well as the integration of market mechanisms in the rescue and reform plans.
