Every year millions of people leave their home countries, driven out by political persecution or in search of a better future for themselves and their families. Of those who leave, thousands will never reach their destinations. And for those who reach safer havens, the new beginnings often bring new problems: bureaucracy, unemployment, poverty, homelessness and discrimination. The challenges in areas such as integration, citizenship, political participation, family reunification and work migration should not be underestimated. In addition, the common practice of gender-neutral policies often affects migrant women to their disadvantage, leaving them even more vulnerable. Are current European and national migration and migrant integration policies lagging behind reality? What reforms are needed? What challenges need to be overcome to enforce a holistic immigrant integration policy?
