About the event
Luxembourg assumed the Council presidency on 1 July with a distinctively liberal programme. Among the country’s priorities for the presidency are stimulating investment to boost growth, countering inequalities through social investment and advancing the digital single market, competitiveness and fair competition.
Yet, after the recent showdown in the Greek crisis, the failure to agree on meaningful reform of the EU’s asylum system, and the contested negotiations on TTIP, one challenge looms particularly large: rebuilding citizen’s trust in the European project. How will Luxembourg use its leading role to help meeting this challenge? How will the Presidency translate into reality its promise to listen to the citizens?
Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel is certainly used to consensus-building. At home, his liberal party works in a coalition with the Social Democrats and the Greens. How is this experience helpful in coordinating the work of 28 different EU member states? And what have been the first successes and drawbacks in the first two months of Luxembourg’s Council presidency? Join our breakfast discussion with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel.
