Discussing the Midterm Elections

The United States has its decisive midterm elections coming up on November 6, 2018. Many Americans with the experience from the election in 2016, believe that also this time, anything can happen.

Democrats are motivated to seize control over both the U.S.-Congress and the Senate. They are fuelled by the rise of female candidates, such as the young left-wing rising star out of New York City, congressional candidate Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez. However their success will rely much on whether they will be able to get the vote out, in an election with a usually low participation. For Republicans, Trump’s presidency so far is viewed as a success, with the rewritten trade deal with Mexico and Canada and a historic low in unemployment.

In a discussion we want to reflect on the U.S. Election results and debate what this will mean for U.S. domestic politics, the run up to the presidential elections in 2020 and possible long-term consequences for American foreign and trade policy towards the EU.
