About the event:

Although digital platforms currently only contribute about 7% of added value in the German industrial field, the increasingly diversifying platform landscape will significantly boost this number over the next decade. Apart from its economic contribution, this platform revolution will also shape our way of life: both in business and society.

During the first revolution-phase, American and Chinese social media-platforms and marketplaces dominated the market. However, the steady strive of German platform economy has resulted in the revolutionary second era of platform economy. German companies – from start-ups and SMEs to multinationals – offer a plethora of different digital platform use-cases: From marketplaces for B2B products, over booking platforms for bus journeys and IIoT-platforms for analyzing production system, to data platforms for running AI-based data analyses.

In light of recent debates surrounding the regulation of platform-based business models, in both Germany and the EU, this event seeks to explore the current situation, as well as possible next steps of European data- and platform economy policies. Moreover, it aims at providing new thoughts on how to establish a European platform ecosystem – from both the perspective of industry and regulators.
